Small Worlds │ Big Skies

  • Coburg House Art Studios 15 Coburg Street Edinburgh, Scotland, EH6 6ET United Kingdom (map)

Connected by a common theme but with differing perspectives, artists Rachel George and Mary Farrell take the natural world as their shared starting point.

Rachel George paints mainly in oils and is drawn to water and sky - particularly Scotland’s coastline, from her local stamping grounds in East Lothian to the Outer Hebrides, where she is a frequent visitor. The beauty and power of the natural environment and the ever-changing skies and sea are an addictive and infinite subject matter - endlessly inspiring, and a continual challenge to capture. She works on watercolour sketches and small oils on board in situ, translated into larger works on canvas in her Edinburgh studio.

Jeweller and Printmaker, Mary Farrell finds inspiration for her original silver jewellery in nature’s forms and patterns, embracing the irregular and adding playful elements of movement, tone and texture. She is fascinated by the hidden architecture of nature’s living and growing small worlds and its often overlooked, complex, structures. In printmaking, she works in both etching and relief, aiming to communicate a sense of the energy and vibrancy contained within the tiny organisms that make our world through her love of colour, line and experimentation.
