Exhibiting together for the first time, Whatever Happens, Happens is an eclectic mix of collage prints, riso-printed books, hand-painted animation frames and more from animator-designer-director-researchers Jenny Jokela and Dan Castro. Through playful experimentation and vibrant, exciting work, they explore how following-your-nose and not having a plan can be a valid, productive, terrifying, joyful way of making art.
Dan Castro is London-born, Edinburgh-based, award-winning animation director, lecturer and PhD researcher. His work explores big feelings told through simple stories, inspired by watching cartoons on his grandad’s VHS player. Most recently, his research has developed to an obsession with plork - the practice of playfully working. This has driven his inter-disciplinary artistic practice on a never-ending quest to make things without overthinking them, and to have fun doing it. He shaves his head monthly, and is taller than you, probably.
Jenny Jokela is a Finnish award-winning and BAFTA-longlisted animation director and artist based in Edinburgh. Her colourful, hand-painted short films focus on mental health related to female sexuality and relationship trauma. With work often focusing on visualising raw emotions, Jokela is interested in an intuitive method of storytelling that allows her paintings to express complicated feelings that are difficult to verbalise through traditional storytelling.
