The Living Mountain: Paintings by Evie Rose Thornton

Inspired by her recent residency in Florence, Italy, supported by the RSA John Kinross Scholarship, Evie Rose Thornton’s latest body of work explores the rugged beauty of mountain landscapes, culminating in a series of paintings inspired by the Alps, Dolomites and Highlands. With their towering peaks and hidden valleys, these paintings explore the beauty and harshness of these landscapes. These images are painted from memory and took inspiration from sketches made en plein air.

This exhibition is named after Nan Shepherd’s book The Living Mountain, a poetic meditation of the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland. This seminal text explored Shepherd’s love for mountains and her respect for the natural forces that have shaped them over time. Thornton’s paintings aim to emulate these writings through an abstracted lens, focusing more on the emotional response to her journey through the mountains from Scotland to Florence and back. Through vibrant brushstrokes and textured compositions, Thornton’s paintings evoke the sublime nature of mountains, exploring curiosity and offering reflection on the natural world.
