Noel Shelley’s work examines the essence of what it means to be an artist—a question that has shaped his practice over the years. Is artistry a refined skill, a determination to excel in a chosen field, or simply the feeling of being “at home” with one’s creative self? Shelley’s photographic portraits explore these ideas, offering an intimate look at artists who seem entirely at ease in their creative environments—whether at home in their own skin, on the road, or immersed in their artistic thoughts and passions.
His series, Unseen Stages, embodies a dynamic exploration of movement and collaboration, featuring projects with performance artists Sharon O’Brien, known as “The Fire and Light Fairy,” and Margarida Macieira, an international Gaga movement teacher. O’Brien’s Weave collection showcases the fluidity of motion, with long-exposure photography capturing a five-second flow of energy frozen in time.
Shelley’s collaboration with Macieira stems from her deep understanding of Gaga, a movement language developed by Ohad Naharin. During a carefully crafted photoshoot, Macieira demonstrated sequences of this unique improvisational technique, resulting in photographs that captured the raw, personal flow of her movements.
These projects reflect Shelley’s own journey as an artist, driven by curiosity and a desire to connect with people and places. Through his lens, he reveals the authenticity of his subjects, celebrating their individuality and creative spirit while advancing his own exploration of artistry and movement.
