Madeleine Shepherd is an interdisciplinary maker with interests in textiles, science, maths and science fiction. Her work ranges from large scale installations and community projects to fashion accessories (under the name Knot Unknot). She bought her first punch card knitting machine in the 1980s but always found the card size frustrating. Introduced to hacked knitting machines at the Electronic Textile Institute, Berlin, she rebuilt her own machine in 2015. This enables her to knit large images and mathematically generated patterns. Since then machine knitting has taken over almost all of her practice.
