Tract is an exhibition of mixed media drawings and collages by visual artist, Alan Chapman, and contemporary jewellery by Eleanor Symms, which combines found and reclaimed plastics, paper and text from obsolete books and recycled silver.
Alan Chapman works across a range of media, employing a combination of printmaking, collage and painting techniques to make work which is multi-layered and textural. Often, using found objects to create printed textures and images within his work, currently he is very interested in repurposing elements of his drawings and prints and combining these with found text from old and obsolete sources. He is fascinated by repurposing now obsolete methods and materials, such as Letraset and letter stencils. Using these, along with printed text and drawings, original and manipulated, he makes new multi-layered images which echo a process of technological change and its impact.
Eleanor Symms designs and makes sustainable contemporary jewellery. She creates unique pieces of jewellery and small editions, from found and reclaimed materials. Eleanor is fascinated by ‘stuff’ and the properties and potential of different materials. She aims to make work which is wearable, original and beautiful and which questions ideas of ‘preciousness’. Much of Eleanor’s work uses found and reclaimed plastics, combined with recycled silver. In this exhibition, she also explores and responds to print, text and obsolete books, creating pieces, incorporating paper, which are playful and sculptural.
