Christina's work is inspired by nature, she has experimented with many different metalworking techniques to achieve an organic quality in her work. This led her to investigate a new material called Silver Clay which was developed by Mitsubishi Precious Metals in Japan in the early nineties. Silver Clay comprises minute particles of silver suspended in an organic binder and water. The material handles just like ceramic clay. Once fired the organic binder burns away and the metal particles fuse together, so the piece becomes pure metal. Christina makes structures for neckpieces, earrings, bangles and brooches out of wire, steel, silver or 18ct gold, onto which are modelled organic forms with silver clay. This means entire pieces can be created without soldering.
She also runs Silver Clay workshops for her studio. It’s a really easy material to use, especially for those new to jewellery making. The workshops cover a range of techniques from simple textured pendants to bead making and stone setting.
